Educational development vital for Montana Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:46 PDT Education in Montana’s public schools has always been a deeply personal subject to me. When I was nine years old, my father passed away, and like so many young people who are suddenly thrown into hardship, my future success was suddenly called into question. Like many of the students I teach who face these kinds of challenges, my fate seemed to depend on circumstances beyond my control. In my case, what made the difference was the influence of people who made sure that I did not let economic hardship or family instability keep me from achieving my dreams: public school teachers.
Obama’s campaign Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:47 PDT We, here in Montana, are being bombarded with Barack Obama’s ads and telephone calls! Last night was the last straw when I was called a “racist” by one of Obama’s campaign workers! I did not know that by stating I will not be voting for Mr. Obama and referring to him as the “first black candidate” I was a racist! I know I am biased towards Senator Clinton for I feel she is more qualified and has the experience and I know about Senator Clinton, but what about Obama and his ties to Tony Rezko will he be indicted for criminal wrongdoings? What about his ties to Bill Ayers, the known terrorist of the l970s? What about how Obama preaches to the American people from his pulpit or his Teleprompters, just like Rev. Wright? His arrogance is very noticeable when he speaks! What about the $80 million from the oil companies and his Pacs? I am not fooled by Obama or the pundits and the push by the Washington insiders for Obama because they hate Hillary Clinton. I do know that a vote for Obama in June is a vote for John McCain in November!
Fairgrounds progress Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:48 PDT The Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds is taking on a beautiful new look. Our 36,000-square-foot exhibit hall and the 2,596-seat grandstand is on budget and on schedule. We will cut the ribbon this fall to open both facilities. The rodeo arena, complete with every building and fence built by volunteers, will be moved north of the grandstands and ready for use in 2009.
Nurses’ Week Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:48 PDT Nurses have consistently rated first for honesty and integrity every year but one since 1999. Last week, starting May 6, RN Recognition Day, and ending May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, was National Nurses’ Week. Nurses’ Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and other facilities to the halls of research institutions, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society. Nursing is facing a crisis. The nation’s RN workforce is aging and by 2020 it is estimated that there will be a shortage of one million nurses. In 2005, schools of nursing were forced to reject more than 147,000 qualified applicants, partially due to a shortage of nursing educators. The Nursing Workforce Development Program allows more candidates to receive scholarships to attend nursing school or to get advance nursing degrees. But as with most programs, obtaining funding is difficult. Please take time to write your elected officials encouraging support of additional funding for the Nursing Workforce Development Program and take time to thank a nurse.
Tennis pals Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:50 PDT A big congrats to Adam Strizich and Lander Jewett, two high school seniors who continue to do great things on the tennis court. Helena has always been a supportive and connected community when it comes to the tennis scene, and these two guys are a testament to that.
Neighborhood HCC meetings Tue, 13 May 2008 23:29:50 PDT Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 15. The Helena Citizens Council (HCC) is hosting neighborhood meetings from 6:30 to 8:30. Come meet your HCC representatives and neighbors, share a topic that is on your mind, or just sit back, enjoy complementary treats and listen. The neighborhood meetings are an avenue for the city to get important information out to you. Also, it’s a chance for citizens to give input or bring up an issue for discussion.

On the road, with a tune in my head Wed, 14 May 2008 13:40:59 +0000 I’m off to the far reaches of Eastern Montana this morning with photographer David Grubbs, with plans to return Thursday night. I’ll be checking in and possibly posting news from the hinterlands, but I don’t know for sure. Meanwhile, treat yourself to this video of an amazing young trio, and then watch them, a few years [...]
What? No Delta-Northwest flight cuts? Thu, 15 May 2008 23:32:05 PDT Thumbs up to the news from the heads of Delta and Northwest airlines that their upcoming merger won't result in the loss of any air service in Montana. In fact, they said, they're planning to add a Billings-Atlanta flight. It has been widely anticipated that the new airline will want to save money by reducing flights around the country.
Vote for Nielsen Thu, 15 May 2008 23:31:55 PDT Fritz O. Behr, 2220 Alpine Drive #G - 05/16/08 I’m voting for David L. Nielsen for district judge in Montana’s First Judicial District, which includes all of Lewis and Clark and Broadwater counties.

Butte beckons, and one road story Fri, 16 May 2008 19:46:07 +0000 I’m sorry if I seem to have been competing with the dullest blog in the world lately, but I’ve been busy and preoccupied and now I’m getting ready to depart for the Butte Press Club (see this description of last year’s event) and probably won’t be near a computer again until tomorrow afternoon. Our speaker [...]

Support Matt Cohn Mon, 19 May 2008 09:23:24 PDT I am supporting Matt Cohn to represent House District 82 in the Montana Legislature.
Tough choice Mon, 19 May 2008 09:23:25 PDT It is hard to admit to jealousy, but I have to. In HD82, Matt Cohn and Mike Menahan are running against each other. I know Matt personally and Mike by reputation. Both are stellar individuals and would both make superb legislators. It is a shame that by voting for one, a ballot has to go against the other. Therefore I offer this solution: the top vote-getter represents HD82, and the second-place finisher comes over here to the East Valley and represents us, where our district goes clear to Ryegate and we rarely see a candidate.
Had by all Sun, 18 May 2008 20:21:54 +0000 I’ve been back from Butte for a little less than 24 hours, but I didn’t feel up to writing anything yesterday about the annual meeting of the Butte Press Club. I was very tired, having slept maybe five hours, after a very long night. About 60 people came to the meeting—including 12 people from Billings, [...]

Wolves are protected Tue, 20 May 2008 23:42:14 PDT I get very tired of the environmental groups always wanting more and placing frivolous lawsuits that cost us sportsmen and taxpayers money.
Vote for Seeley Tue, 20 May 2008 23:42:15 PDT Having spent the past 12 years as a law enforcement officer with the Montana Department of Justice, I’ve had the pleasure of working side by side with Kathy Seeley.
Brewers send shot heard ’round Helena Tue, 20 May 2008 23:42:17 PDT The Helena Brewers’ message to baseball fans this week in signing a 10-year contract to remain here was much like Crash Davis from “Bull Durham” putting down the old No. 1 finger and telling the batter the fastball was coming: There’s no curveball here. The Brewers are serious about staying.
Except for the parachute, maybe Wed, 21 May 2008 16:41:24 +0000 The best headline today over at the MNA: Local Pilot Allegedy Found Naked Behind Shed “Local,” in this case, being Harrisburg, Pa., but never mind, just enjoy. In related news, over at the Devil’s Workshop, David Crisp links to a very mean Web site.
Satire overload Wed, 21 May 2008 14:35:17 +0000 Political humorists, according to political humorist Bruce McCall, are suffering this election season, having so much material to work from that they are being sorely strained. An example: Observers point to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s recent record-setting spate. Over one dizzying weekend she generated so much chuckle-fare about guzzling beer, shooting off guns, pining away for [...]
A new look at Kaczynski, his brother, his victim Wed, 21 May 2008 01:56:15 +0000 Rob Elder, a Billings native and Chicago Tribune reporter who was featured in the Gazette a few years ago after publishing his first book, has written a compelling story for the Tribune about the relationship between Ted and Dave Kaczynski and between Dave and his brother’s last victim, Gary Wright. There are a lot of insights [...]
Criticism has a familiar ring to it Tue, 20 May 2008 17:56:47 +0000 If you’ve been reading the Gazette’s stories on Barack Obama’s visit, and all the hundreds of comments attached to them (and I don’t think you need any links, do you?), you might be ready for a change of pace. I would direct your attention to the main story about President Bush’s visit to Billings on [...]
Vote for Bullock Wed, 21 May 2008 23:07:01 PDT As a former Chief Deputy Attorney General, I am supporting Steve Bullock for Attorney General because he has the integrity, experience and energy to lead the state’s law enforcement agency.
Exchange students Wed, 21 May 2008 23:07:01 PDT Our names are Ainura Derkembaeva and Ruslan Aminov and we are Kyrgyz and Russian exchange students. We arrived in Helena last August, and have been staying with the Tiberi and Walrath families and attending Capital High School.

A water-quality plan Wed, 21 May 2008 23:07:04 PDT I tend to question the necessity of Emergency Zoning Regulations. There is, however, cause for concern in regard to water quality, and failure to act will only exacerbate the problem.

Will slow to adapt to new information Thu, 22 May 2008 13:52:55 +0000 George Will is an awfully smart guy, so I was surprised to see him using one of the dumbest arguments of all to counter forecasts of climate change. He says that even if there is global warming, polar bears will adapt, as they always have. Then he quotes a “former British Cabinet member”: “Over [...]
Understanding is important Sun, 25 May 2008 23:52:10 PDT I am writing in support of Mike Menahan, who is running for House District 82 and faces a primary on June 3.

Readers say move market Sun, 25 May 2008 23:52:19 PDT Judging from the the response to our Question of the Week, there could be quite a bit of support in the community for the idea of moving the Helena Farmers Market from its home on Fuller Avenue to the Downtown Walking Mall.
One last ride for Utah Phillips Mon, 26 May 2008 01:00:18 +0000 It has come to my attention that U. Utah Phillips, folksinger, hobo, humorist and anarchist, is dead. I happened to have written about Phillips about five weeks ago, when some friends of his in Missoula were planning a fund-raiser to help him with his medical expenses. I knew he had been ailing for [...]

Seeley most qualified for judge Mon, 26 May 2008 23:41:55 PDT As the June 3 primary approaches, I encourage all voters to cast an educated and intelligent vote for District Court Judge. Vote Kathy Seeley.
Consider hosting a Brewer or two Mon, 26 May 2008 23:41:55 PDT The arrival of the Brewers baseball team is rapidly approaching. For many of these baseball players, this will be their first season of professional baseball and they will be a long way from their homes.
